Important Information
Arrival: The bus bell rings at 8:40. Students are expected to have book bags unpacked and be in the classroom when the bell rings at 8:55. If students arrive after 8:55, they must sign in at the office.
Changes in Transportation: If you plan to pick up your child that normally rides the bus or you wish for your child to ride a different bus than usual, you must send a written note even if the person picking the student up is on the family information card.
Do not rely on your child to tell me this information, because children often become confused and relay messages incorrectly. If no written note is received, your child will be sent home by his/her usual method of transportation.
School Attendance: Your child’s regular and prompt attendance at school is crucial to his/her success. First grade learning activities are both grouped and individually organized with classmates. Please view school as a priority, and see to it that your child attends everyday unless of illness or emergency.
Absences: The school requires that you call the attendance line and send in a note when the student returns. Work can be made up when the student returns and is feeling better. Please note that not all work done in class may be sent home as makeup work, but will be sent home as needed at the discretion of the teacher.
Medication: Please check the school handbook for medications. The nurse must administer all medications, including cough drops and Chap Stick.
Vacations: A Pre-Arranged Absence form must be completed. Depending on the length of the absence, work may be sent home during the vacation time (if review), or after the student returns (if the work involves new concepts needed explanations by the teacher).
Take Home Folders: Take Home folders come home every night and is an important means of communication between home and school. Please check your child’s folder everyday. There are two pockets inside: RETURN TO SCHOOL and KEEP AT HOME . Things in the RETURN TO SCHOOL pocket must be completed and returned to school. Things in the KEEP AT HOME pocket are for your information. If you are ever sending something back to school (like writing a note to anyone at school, returning a tear off form, returning a field trip form, or sending in money), please place it in the RETURN TO SCHOOL pocket. Please use a full sheet of paper when sending notes. Small notes are often not seen and fall into the folder pocket. This is the pocket your child will check every morning for papers to hand in.
Money: Any money sent to school must be contained in a sealed envelope with your child’s name, room number (216), and teacher's name on the front.
Lunch Money: It is best to put money on your child’s lunch card online. If you do send cash or a check, please send it in an envelope marked with your child’s first and last name and label it Lunch Money. Cash is not taken through the lunch line and needs to be sent to the office and entered online before lunch.
Homework/Grading Policy: The purpose of homework is to review and reinforce skills or concepts that your child has already learned in school. If your child is struggling with his or her homework, please jot a quick note to let me know. Daily homework may include spelling, math fact practice, and reading. A homework schedule will come home on a monthly basis.
Report Cards: A grade A, B, C, or NI (Needs Improvement) is earned in math at each quarter. Reading and Writing will have letter grades the 3rd and 4th grading periods only. However, progress monitoring statements for the indicators within each subject area will be marked throughout the year. M= Meets standard, P = Progressing/Developing Standard, and NI = Needs Improvement. Science and Social Studies grades appear on the report card in the end 2nd and 4th grading periods. These subjects receive an O = Outstanding, S = Satisfactory, or NI = Needs Improvement.
Parent/Teacher Relationship: I believe that a good parent-teacher relationship is necessary for maximum school success. Throughout the year I will communicate with you through newsletters, notes, telephone calls, report cards, emails, tweets, and parent-student/teacher conferences. I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns at any time. You can send me a note or e-mail me at [email protected]
Parent Participation: Throughout the school year there will be a variety of special classroom activities and celebrations. I encourage you to attend these functions when possible and to support them by sending needed supplies or treats. Your support of school activities makes your child feel important and sends the message that you value school.
Water Bottles: Students may also bring a water bottle to school during hot days (80 degrees or hotter). It may only contain water- no juices, sports drinks, etc.
Snacks: Since we are the first group for recess and lunch, we will not be having snack in the classroom. Students can get breakfast in the cafeteria prior to 8:55 a.m.
Birthday Treats: Only safe, non-food treats permitted; enough for all students in the class.
Birthday Party Invitations: Per school policy, these are not to be handed out in class unless it is to the entire class. I will provide a class directory and list anyone who wishes to make their information available to other classmates.
Dress Code: Shoes: No open toe or strapless shoes. Shorts: No more than 3 inches above the knee. Shirts: No sleeveless, spaghetti strap shirts. See Handbook for more info.
